Research on Genres: Mystery

I didn't really have an idea as to what genre I was looking into because my storyline is not finalised yet. I think it's going to be a Romantic Mystery but also with elements of thriller and edginess thrown in. I have many ideas, such as maybe making it a short documentary on someone famous, like a kidnapper or making more mystery than thriller. I'm unsure on what I what. So I'm doing some research into short films made by professionals to see what I like best.

Here is my research into 'Mystery' films:
The IMDB website splits the movies into their most prominent genre, so here was the list for Mystery.

Judging by the movies present: Thrillers, Anime and Crime, it could be suggested that mysteries are mainly based around detective movies, where a crime or situation needs to be solved, However mine could have elements of this within in.

Short films I've seen to do with mystery include:

I love the writing at the beginning with the quote and then the credits. Plus the sound of like being a bubble adds that element of mystery really well. The scribble from the pen also emphasizes the eery feel. The heighten sounds of all the things gives it a new level of depth. Also, maps and pictures indicates stalkerish tones. I want to include this is my film, as I am concluding to the idea of a stalker.



Again, this starts in an abandoned location, with the tracking long shot showing a man and his works on the wall. Followed by diegetic of a scheme or plan over the top, in the style of a radio. I love the set up of this in the beginning. The voice in another language is an interesting idea as its either spies of some international corporation.



The setting again,  at the beginning, the tonal colours are interesting aswell. The shots are interesting as well, I am liking the behind ones throughout this is research. The leaves also suggest a deserted place. Woods are always full of mystery. The editing here is very interested in terms of the monotones.  I hate to voice over here, subtracts from the drama. However the tracking shots towards the house I like.

So anyway, to conclude, Mystery is a very high potential but it's not just Mystery I want to portray. I like the elements I've found through my research, such as the foley sounds, abandoned settings and behind shots. This will contribute to my overall final product.

Evaluation 3 - What have you learnt from audience feedback?

Audience feedback has been crucial to the overall effectiveness of my short film. Throughout the whole process I have adapted and changed my ideas from what my audience had to say. In order to receive the most effective feedback I targeted an audience of the same age range and demographic that I was aiming my film at, which was males and females between 16 - 29. Pre-Production My first major part of audience feedback was during the planning stages of my film, where I was able to skype with a professional film director. He first suggested to always be filming, and catch the mistakes made on set. This allowed me to watch inspirational movies and appreciate the shots that were not meant to be. Furthermore, Terry Hall also contributed feedback to my idea about effortless filming her dancing from multiple angles. He suggested using Match on Action shots, and to film her hundreds of times. Evaluation 4 - How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

For my Advanced Portfolio I made a short film in the social realist genre . I've learned a host of new skills relating to digital technology which helped me create a very successful media product, along with synergous ancillary tasks – a film poster and a magazine review. At A2 I was much more comfortable with using a wide range of digital technology and so was able to incorporate more advanced ideas into my research and planning. I also acquired a new Canon 5D camera to better the quality of my shots. So for this task, I created two ancillary tasks of a website and a film poster . This meant researching existing magazine review pages from magazines such as, Empire Magazine and film posters from Movies such as Fish Tank.
