History of Short Films

"In the beginning, all films were short." - an interesting article from The Telegraph reports on the long history of short films  http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/film/film-life/7593291/The-long-history-of-short-films.html To sum it up, it was the 20th century that seen films to get longer as since the very first films presented to the public in 1894 through Thomas Edison’s Kinetoscope, a peepshow-like device for individual viewing they were all very short one-shot “actuality” or “interest” films depicting celebrities, royal processions, travelogues, current affairs and scenes from everyday life. However in the early 1900s, improvements in recording and editing technology allowed film-makers to produce longer, multi-shot films and after about 1910 onwards, studio competition and audience demand induced film-makers to make even longer, multi-reel films and the first features were born. Now-a- days short films have fallen out of favour with commercial cinemas but thei

MindMapping Plan

So to start this course, I needed to decide out of the briefs I was given which one I was going to pursue. I did some mind-mapping as my original idea was to do a music video but it was getting more and more complicated. So, I decided to plan some of the other briefs also and this is what I came out with: My final plan is to create a short film, with all my incorporated ideas from the other briefs also.

Audience Theory

Knowing my audience is a key part of a successful project so having some theory base behind it is always good. Media Audiences can be defined in terms of: - Location - the domestic (home) consumption of media output raises questions about regulation and control. - Consumption - audiences are defined by what they consume e.g. genre - Size - there is no need to distinguish between mass audience and niche audiences. - Subjectivity - the impact that membership of pre- existing prou[s will have on audience members e.g. gender, nationality, race, religion. There are three types of audiences that can apply to help us come to a better understanding about the relationship between texts and audience. 1. The Effects Model (or the Hypodermic model) The consumption of the media texts has an effect or influence upon its audience and it is normally considered that this effect is negative, because audiences are passive and powerless to prevent the influence, so the power lies in the messag

The Brief

This year 2016-17, I will be taking on the task of researching, producing and editing of one of the briefs. Some of the Briefs: "A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with two of the following three options: a website homepage for the band;  a Digipak for the album's release; a magazine advertisement for the digipak." "A short film in its entirety, lasting approximately five minutes, which may be live action or animated or a combination of both, together with two of the following three options: a poster for the film;  a radio trailer for the film;  a film magazine review page featuring the film."  I'm really excited to express my creative freedom on this music video or short film as I have many inspirations and want to create work that responded to my artistic visions.
